A new national business names registration will replace the current state and territory registers so that businesses only need to register their name with a single national register. The new national register will commence on 28 May 2012 and be managed by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). The new ASIC business names register will be conducted online.
Business names currently registered in a state or territory?
For business name owners who already have a business name registered in a state or territory, that existing registration will automatically be transferred to the national business names register. Business name owners will not need to do a thing. The registration period will also transfer and ASIC will then contact the Business name owner when it is time to renew their business name.
